Gift quality, Fine. Clean, unmarked pages. Good binding and cover. Hardcover and dust jacket. Bird's Eye Views -- As new towns and cities spread across the American frontier in the nineteenth century, itinerant artists soon followed, documenting these growing urban centers by drawing aerial perspectives, also known as bird's eye views. Commissioned by land speculators, local businesses, civic organizations, and individual citizens, these renderings fostered both civic pride and local commerce. The use of color lithography, a recent invention popularized by such prominent publishers as Currier & Ives, allowed the inexpensive reproduction of the highest-quality drawings, so that a bird's eye view was within the financial budget of even the smallest towns. These extraordinarily detailed lithographs eventually numbered in the thousands and now serve as a rich pictorial record of North America as it stood a century ago. This sequel to our highly acclaimed title An Atlas of Rare City Maps collects over 100 views dating between 1835 and 1902, showing the streets, buildings, churches, bridges, waterways, and surrounding countryside of North American towns, ranging from burgeoning metropolitan centers to small logging towns and mining camps. Baltimore, Brooklyn, Denver, Indianapolis, Memphis, Montreal, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Syracuse, and Washington are just a few of the cities presented in this collection. The exquisite color and fine detail of these bird's eye views have been reproduced in all their original glory; also included is an introduction by John W. Reps providing a background on the artistic process and on urban development in the nineteenth century. John W. Reps is professor emeritus of city and regional planning at Cornell University. He is a renowned authority on the history of American urban planning and has written numerous books on the topic, including The Making of Urban America, Cities of the American West, and Views and Viewmakers of Urban America. The "Mighty Mississippi" has inspired writers and artists for centuries. During the 19th-century, Mississippi River towns attracted artists who travelled throughout the United States producing detailed drawings of cities and towns, which were then printed and sold as lithographs or used as wood engravings to illustrate books and magazines. Depicting each street and building, as well as the natural setting and geographic features of the surrounding areas, these bird's-eye views were enormously popular. In "Cities of the Mississippi", John W. Reps brings together many historical views of Mississipi River towns alongside contemporary aerial photographs and text. The result is a voyage through the 19th-century and a visual record of American urban development. From the Balize, a village for ship pilots near the mouth of the Mississippi, to St. Cloud, Minnesota, at its source, readers will experience Mississippi River towns ranging from the major metropolises of New Orleans, St. Louis and Minneapolis, to the small towns of Cairo, Kaskaskia, and Prairie du Chien. Reps introduces the artists, printers and publishers who recorded the development of the cities and offers descriptions of the cities by residents, journalists, and travellers in their own words. Modern aerial photographs of 23 of the towns illustrate changes to the urban scene and demonstrate the lasting influence of the initial city patterns on subsequent growth.

The Topkapi Scroll -- Geometry and Ornament in Islamic Architecture (Sketchbooks & Albums)
by Gulru, Necipoglu; Contributor-Mohammad al-Asad

Pages: In Stock: 1

Gift quality, fine. Large elephant folio. (14 x 11.5 inches) Dust jacket in mylar. Perfect binding and cover. Clean, unmarked pages. Hardcover.

From the publisher: Featuring elaborate star-and-polygon patterns, the Topkapi scroll, probably made in Persia in the late 15th or early 16th century, was a manual of architectural designs used in complex vaults, geometric ornaments, mosaic tiles and polychromatic masonry. In this scholarly, sumptuously illustrated study, the scroll, preserved in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace Museum, serves as a point of departure for Necipoglu's history of Islamic architectural drawing and her trenchant critique of European "orientalist" assumptions about Islamic culture. Professor of Islamic art and architecture at Harvard, Necipoglu maintains that a shared classical heritage in the Latin West, Byzantium and the Islamic world was remodeled in each civilization by differing monotheistic traditions. She argues that Islamic geometric patterns, often dismissed as mere decoration, comprised a "sign system" reflecting religious and ideological currents, mathematical and scientific advances and mystical beliefs throughout pre-modern Islamic history.
