q-Difference Operators, Orthogonal Polynomials, and Symmetric Expansions (Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society)
by Douglas Bowman
Condition: New$45.00
Binding: PaperbackIn Stock: 100
Notes:
Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. We explore ramifications and extensions of a $q$-difference operator method first used by L.J. Rogers for deriving relationships between special functions involving certain fundamental $q$-symmetric polynomials. In special cases these symmetric polynomials reduce to well-known classes of orthogonal polynomials. A number of basic properties of these polynomials follow from our approach. This leads naturally to the evaluation of the Askey-Wilson integral and generalizations. We also find expansions of certain generalized basic hypergeometric functions in terms of the symmetric polynomials. This provides us with a quick route to understanding the group structure generated by iterating the two-term transformations of these functions. We also lay some infrastructure for more general investigations in the future.

Q-Series With Applications to Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Physics: A Conference on Q-Series With Applications to Combinatorics, Number Theory, and ... of Illinois (Contemporary Mathematics)

Condition: New$72.00
Binding: PaperbackIn Stock: 100

Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. The subject of $q$-series can be said to begin with Euler and his pentagonal number theorem. In fact, $q$-series are sometimes called Eulerian series. Contributions were made by Gauss, Jacobi, and Cauchy, but the first attempt at a systematic development, especially from the point of view of studying series with the products in the summands, was made by E. Heine in 1847. In the latter part of the nineteenth and in the early part of the twentieth centuries, two English mathematicians, L. J. Rogers and F. H. Jackson, made fundamental contributions. In 1940, G. H. Hardy described what we now call Ramanujan's famous $_1\psi_1$ summation theorem as "a remarkable formula with many parameters." This is now one of the fundamental theorems of the subject.Despite humble beginnings, the subject of $q$-series has flourished in the past three decades, particularly with its applications to combinatorics, number theory, and physics. During the year 2000, the University of Illinois embraced The Millennial Year in Number Theory. One of the events that year was the conference $q$-Series with Applications to Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Physics. This event gathered mathematicians from the world over to lecture and discuss their research. This volume presents nineteen of the papers presented at the conference. The excellent lectures that are included chart pathways into the future and survey the numerous applications of $q$-series to combinatorics, number theory, and physics.

Quadratic Algebras (University Lecture Series)
by A. Polishchuk; L. Positselski
Condition: New$37.00
Binding: PaperbackIn Stock: 100
Notes:
Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. This book introduces recent developments in the study of algebras defined by quadratic relations. One of the main problems in the study of these (and similarly defined) algebras is how to control their size. A central notion in solving this problem is the notion of a Koszul algebra, which was introduced in 1970 by S. Priddy and then appeared in many areas of mathematics, such as algebraic geometry, representation theory, noncommutative geometry, $K$-theory, number theory, and noncommutative linear algebra. The authors give a coherent exposition of the theory of quadratic and Koszul algebras, including various definitions of Koszulness, duality theory, Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt-type theorems for Koszul algebras, and the Koszul deformation principle. In the concluding chapter of the book, they explain a surprising connection between Koszul algebras and one-dependent discrete-time stochastic processes. The book can be used by graduate students and researchers working in algebra and any of the above-mentioned areas of mathematics.

Quadratic and Hermitian Forms (Cms Conference Proceedings, Vol 4)
by C. R. Riehm; Editor-I. Hambleton
Condition: New$57.23
Binding: PaperbackIn Stock: 100
Notes:
Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. This book contains the proceedings of the 1983 Seminar on Quadratic and Hermitian Forms held at McMaster University, July 1983. Between 1945 and 1965, most of the work in quadratic (and hermitian) forms took place in arithmetic theory (M. Eichler, M. Kneser, O. T. O'Meara). In the mid-sixties, the algebraic theory of quadratic forms experienced a reawakening with the fundamental discoveries of A. Pfister. More recently, there have been signs that the subject, in both its algebraic and arithmetic aspects, is once more in a state of change, reaching out into new and different areas. Since the advent of surgery theory in the late sixties, that subject has been one of the principal users of the theory of quadratic and hermitian forms. Therefore, hermitian $K$-theory was included within the scope of the conference to further the contact between its practitioners and those in quadratic forms.

The Quadratic Isoperimetric Inequality for Mapping Tori of Free Group Automorphisms (Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society)
by Martin R. Bridson; Daniel Groves
Condition: New$70.00
Binding: PaperbackIn Stock: 100
Notes:
Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. The authors prove that if $F$ is a finitely generated free group and $\phi$ is an automorphism of $F$ then $F\rtimes_\phi\mathbb Z$ satisfies a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. The authors' proof of this theorem rests on a direct study of the geometry of van Kampen diagrams over the natural presentations of free-by-cylic groups. The main focus of this study is on the dynamics of the time flow of $t$-corridors, where $t$ is the generator of the $\mathbb Z$ factor in $F\rtimes_\phi\mathbb Z$ and a $t$-corridor is a chain of 2-cells extending across a van Kampen diagram with adjacent 2-cells abutting along an edge labelled $t$. The authors prove that the length of $t$-corridors in any least-area diagram is bounded by a constant times the perimeter of the diagram, where the constant depends only on $\phi$. The authors' proof that such a constant exists involves a detailed analysis of the ways in which the length of a word $w\in F$ can grow and shrink as one replaces $w$ by a sequence of words $w_m$, where $w_m$ is obtained from $\phi(w_{m-1})$ by various cancellation processes. In order to make this analysis feasible, the authors develop a refinement of the improved relative train track technology due to Bestvina, Feighn and Handel.

Qualitative Theory of Control Systems (Translations of Mathematical Monographs)
by A. A. Davydov
Condition: New$68.00
Binding: HardcoverIn Stock: 100
Notes:
Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. This book analyzes control systems using results from singularity theory and the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations. The main part of the book focuses on systems with two-dimensional phase space. The study of singularities of controllability boundaries for a typical system leads to the classification of normal forms of implicit first-order differential equations near a singular point. Davydov indicates several applications of these normal forms. The book is accessible to graduate students and researchers working in control theory, singularity theory, and various areas of differential equations, as well as in applications.

Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations (Mathematical Surveys and Monographs)
by Zhang Zhi-fen; Ding Tong-ren; Huang Wen-zao; Dong Zhen-xi
Condition: New$125.00
Binding: PaperbackIn Stock: 100
Notes:
Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. This book provides an introduction to and a comprehensive study of the qualitative theory of ordinary differential equations. It begins with fundamental theorems on existence, uniqueness, and initial conditions, and discusses basic principles in dynamical systems and Poincaré-Bendixson theory. The authors present a careful analysis of solutions near critical points of linear and nonlinear planar systems and discuss indices of planar critical points. A very thorough study of limit cycles is given, including many results on quadratic systems and recent developments in China. Other topics included are: the critical point at infinity, harmonic solutions for periodic differential equations, systems of ordinary differential equations on the torus, and structural stability for systems on two-dimensional manifolds. This books is accessible to graduate students and advanced undergraduates and is also of interest to researchers in this area. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter.

Qualitative Topics in Integer Linear Programming (Translations of Mathematical Monographs)
by V. N. Shevchenko
Condition: New$74.00
Binding: HardcoverIn Stock: 100
Notes:
Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. Integer solutions for systems of linear inequalities, equations, and congruences are considered along with the construction and theoretical analysis of integer programming algorithms. The complexity of algorithms is analyzed dependent upon two parameters: the dimension, and the maximal modulus of the coefficients describing the conditions of the problem. The analysis is based on a thorough treatment of the qualitative and quantitative aspects of integer programming, in particular on bounds obtained by the author for the number of extreme points. This permits progress in many cases in which the traditional approach--which regards complexity as a function only of the length of the input--leads to a negative result.
