The term "arithmetic algebraic geometry" was coined during that period and is now used to denote an entire branch of modern number theory. These same developments in algebraic geometry and $K$-theory greatly influenced research on the arithmetic of fields in general, and the algebraic theory of quadratic forms and the theory of finite-dimensional division algebras in particular. This book contains papers presented at an AMS Summer Research Institute held in July 1992 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The purpose of the conference was to provide a broad overview of the tools from algebraic geometry and $K$-theory that have proved to be the most powerful in solving problems in the theory of quadratic forms and division algebras. In addition, the conference provided a venue for exposition of recent research. A substantial portion of the lectures of the major conference speakers--Colliot-Thélène, Merkurjev, Raskind, Saltman, Suslin, Swan--are reproduced in the expository articles in this book.

We deal with a map $\alpha$ from a finite group $G$ into the automorphism group $Aut({\mathcal L})$ of a factor ${\mathcal L}$ satisfying (i) $G=N \rtimes H$ is a semi-direct product, (ii) the induced map $g \in G \to [\alpha_g] \in Out({\mathcal L})=Aut({\mathcal L})/Int({\mathcal L})$ is an injective homomorphism, and (iii) the restrictions $\alpha \! \! \mid_N, \alpha \! \! \mid_H$ are genuine actions of the subgroups on the factor ${\mathcal L}$. The pair ${\mathcal M}={\mathcal L} \rtimes_{\alpha} H \supseteq {\mathcal N}={\mathcal L}^{\alpha\mid_N}$ (of the crossed product ${\mathcal L} \rtimes_{\alpha} H$ and the fixed-point algebra ${\mathcal L}^{\alpha\mid_N}$) gives us an irreducible inclusion of factors with Jones index $\# G$. The inclusion ${\mathcal M} \supseteq {\mathcal N}$ is of depth $2$ and hence known to correspond to a Kac algebra of dimension $\# G$.A Kac algebra arising in this way is investigated in detail, and in fact the relevant multiplicative unitary (satisfying the pentagon equation) is described. We introduce and analyze a certain cohomology group (denoted by $H^2((N,H),{\mathbf T})$) providing complete information on the Kac algebra structure, and we construct an abundance of non-trivial examples by making use of various cocycles. The operator algebraic meaning of this cohomology group is clarified, and some related topics are also discussed.Sector technique enables us to establish structure results for Kac algebras with certain prescribed underlying algebra structure. They guarantee that "most" Kac algebras of low dimension (say less than $60$) actually arise from inclusions of the form ${\mathcal L} \rtimes_{\alpha} H \supseteq {\mathcal L}^{\alpha\mid_N}$, and consequently their classification can be carried out by determining $H^2((N,H),{\mathbf T})$. Among other things we indeed classify Kac algebras of dimension $16$ and $24$, which (together with previously known results) gives rise to the complete classification of Kac algebras of dimension up to $31$. Partly to simplify classification procedure and hopefully for its own sake, we also study "group extensions" of general (finite-dimensional) Kac algebras with some discussions on related topics.

Brand new. We distribute directly for the publisher. KAM theory is a powerful tool apt to prove perpetual stability in Hamiltonian systems, which are a perturbation of integrable ones. The smallness requirements for its applicability are well known to be extremely stringent. A long standing problem, in this context, is the application of KAM theory to "physical systems" for "observable" values of the perturbation parameters.The authors consider the Restricted, Circular, Planar, Three-Body Problem (RCP3BP), i.e., the problem of studying the planar motions of a small body subject to the gravitational attraction of two primary bodies revolving on circular Keplerian orbits (which are assumed not to be influenced by the small body). When the mass ratio of the two primary bodies is small, the RCP3BP is described by a nearly-integrable Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom; in a region of phase space corresponding to nearly elliptical motions with non-small eccentricities, the system is well described by Delaunay variables. The Sun-Jupiter observed motion is nearly circular and an asteroid of the Asteroidal belt may be assumed not to influence the Sun-Jupiter motion. The Jupiter-Sun mass ratio is slightly less than 1/1000.The authors consider the motion of the asteroid 12 Victoria taking into account only the Sun-Jupiter gravitational attraction regarding such a system as a prototype of a RCP3BP. For values of mass ratios up to 1/1000, they prove the existence of two-dimensional KAM tori on a fixed three-dimensional energy level corresponding to the observed energy of the Sun-Jupiter-Victoria system. Such tori trap the evolution of phase points "close" to the observed physical data of the Sun-Jupiter-Victoria system. As a consequence, in the RCP3BP description, the motion of Victoria is proven to be forever close to an elliptical motion.The proof is based on: 1) a new iso-energetic KAM theory; 2) an algorithm for computing iso-energetic, approximate Lindstedt series; 3) a computer-aided application of 1)+2) to the Sun-Jupiter-Victoria system.The paper is self-contained but does not include the ($\sim$ 12000 lines) computer programs, which may be obtained by sending an e-mail to one of the authors.
