A scarce report on the Danish West Indies in the later 19th century. The Danish West India and Guinea Company settled on St. Thomas in 1672, expanded to St. John in 1683, and purchased St. Croix from the French West Indies Company in 1733. In 1754 the islands were sold to the Danish king, thus becoming royal Danish colonies. The islands were eventually sold to the United States in 1916. The work is concerned primarily with the political and financial circumstances of the colony. Four of the twelve chapters focus on St. Thomas, the final chapter discusses St. Croix. |
