Renowned Texas Congressman, Samuel Rayburn (1882-1961) served as the 43rd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.  Rayburn was the longtime speaker and leader of the Democratic party in Congress.  One of the House office buildings is named after him and he was instrumental in establishing route 66.  He mentored the future president, Lyndon Johnson. Robert Caro wrote a number of particularly interesting chapters on the influence of Mr. Sam on young Lyndon Johnson's career.
