"Before landing in 1634 in what is now the State of Maryland, George Calvert, known as the first Lord Baltimore, spent some months at Avalon, a peninsula on the southeast portion of Newfoundland. Four Marylanders emulating Lord Baltimore journeyed to Canada the latter part of June, 1937, where they joined L.J. Belnap of Montreal and landed at the mouth of the La Loutre River on the southern shores of Anticosti Island, about one hundred and fifty miles west of Avalon. These Marylanders, all from Baltimore, were: Howard Bruce, Albert C. Bruce, Alexander E. Duncan and John E. Semmes. Their adventures follow:"
