One of the major achievements of topographical lithography in Britain and certainly one of the most attractive books on British scenery. The publisher Joseph Hogarth commissioned a large number of drawings of Scottish scenery from the foremost landscape artists of the day, including J.M.W. Turner, David Roberts, J.D. Harding, Joseph Nash, Horatio Macculloch, D.O. Hill, W.A. Nesfield, Sir W. Allan, Clarkson Stanfield, George Cattermore, W.L. Leitch, and Thomas Creswick. The majority of plates were lithographed by Harding, with others by Carrick, Simpson, and Gauci. The plates are magnificent and the grandeur of the Scottish landscape seen through the eyes of such a group of artists makes this one of the outstanding topographical books of the 19th-century.
