A Geneve : Jean-Leonard Pellet, 1780

Volume 2 (of 4). Quarto, 26 cm. Handsome contemporary mottled leather binding. Gilt floral spine and supra-libros on covers.  Minor shelf wear, with some rubbing. Illustrated frontispiece. VIII, 485 p. Clean, unmarked pages. "A large part of the work is said to have been written by Diderot, and others. The sentiments and criticisms contained in it prevented its publication in France; therefore the Abbe Raynal, according to Querard, caused three copies to be first printed at Paris by Stoupe, one of which he left in the care of the printer, the second he reserved for himself. and the third he sent to Geneva to be reprinted as above." - Sabin. 68081.  Cohen, 854.  Raynal's classic work against colonialism and slavery. First published in 1770, this edition was radically revised and caused a backlash which caused Raynal to flee and be condemned to the stake in the public square by the Parliament of Paris.
