George Arrowsmith was born in the State of New Jersey in 1839, he died wearing the uniform of the New York State Volunteers. A graduate of Madison University (now Colgate University) in 1859, and a member of the bar in 1860, he enlisted in the 26th New York State Volunteers in 1861 and became Captain of Company D. He served in the U.S. Volunteers, and, in November of 1862, became Lt. Colonel of the 157th New York State Volunteers. He was mortally wounded on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
