[Architecture of the Radcliffe Camera of Oxford University] First edition. Folio, 41 x 26.5 cm. G-. Bound in 18th century 3/4 calf over marbled boards.  Rubbing to boards.  Rebacked. Scattered spotting / staining (to title and prelims, mostly marginal after).  Renewed end pages.  Illustrated with 22 (of 23) copper plates, engraved by Fourdrinier.  Includes portrait of John Radcliffe (after Kneller).  Lacks Hogath's frontispiece portrait of Gibbs.   Berlin Cat 2334; Fowler 139; Harris 256.  This book celebrates Gibbs' designs for the Radcliffe Camera, his last major work.  He devoted 10 years of his life to the building's completion. Gibbs revised to Hawksmoor's unrealized designs for the building, and "developed into a more compact, domed rotunda, containing a majestic circular reading room reminiscent of an ancient mausoleum."  In this work, Gibbs printed "finely engraved plates showing all aspects of the design and construction of the building and praising the chief craftsmen by name, the volume was in a format then unprecedented in British architectural publications." - Friedman, Terry. James Gibbs (1682-1754), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, 2004.
