Bound in contemporary smooth calf.  Gilt ruled with red morocco spine label.  Collated: xiii, [7], 395, [1] pages, 9 copper plates (primarily of custom): large folding map of the Empire of Russia and Northern Tartary (hand colored).  Refs: Cox I p. 351; ESTC T70180.   Armorial book plate of Richmond Allen, "Virtus Auro Pre Ferenda."  Allen was a noted   captain in the East India Company's army. 

Jean Chappe was a member of the Academy of Science and noted astronomer. Chappe traveled to Siberia to observe the transits of Venus in 1760. Chappe was engaged in longitudinal measurement. This particular book touched on Chappe's experiences and observations in Russia, many unfavorable. Chappe's criticism has the honor of an anonymous refutation by the court of Catherine the Great.
